| Shoyeido Premium Incense is made with centuries-old recipies. Gentle Smile (Misho) and the above contain a high percentage of agarwood/aloeswood. The very highest quality scents are almost pure kyara, the highest grade of agarwood. These fragrances are a treat for incense lovers, and perfect for special occasions. Some of our premium incenses are packaged in Kiri (Paulownia) box. Paulownia wood is extremely light in weight; the specific gravity of Paulownia is .28 to .30, making it the lightest wood in Japan. The advantage of Paulownia boxes is ventilation. When dried, the wood loses its moisture content, shrinks, and allows air to flow freely between the lid and the box. Self breathing, this wood actually expands at high humidity and shrinks in low humidity. This enables the box to self-seal during periods of high humidity, thus protecting your expensive and sensitive incense inside. That same light weight also provides heat insulation, because of the loose fibers and the circulation of air throughout. Unfortunately, Paulownia wood is becoming more difficult to obtain, so many premium incenses from Shoyeido are now boxed in high-quality silk boxes, to afford as much protection as possilble. |
